<Tab/>Neil Alden Armstrong, born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5 1930, was the first man to step foot on the moon. He began learning how to fly at age 14 and earned his wings two years later. After his graduation from high school, he enrolled at Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering on a Navy scholarship. Mr. Armstrong was called to active duty after two years of college and flew 78 combat missions during the Korean War from the "Essex" aircraft carrier. During that time, he was awarded three air medals.
