There are five different classes IP addressing supports, these are; A, B, C, D and E although only classes A, B and C are available for commercial use.
Routing in Internet Protocol
There are two types of routing, dynamic routing and static routing. IP routing protocols are dynamic. These protocols use software inside the routing device to calculate routes automatically at regular intervals.
Dynamic routing uses an IP routing table which has a list of destination addresses.
IP routing specifies that IP datagrams travel through internetworks one hop at a time. The route however is not known when starting the journey. Instead, at each stop, the next destination is calculated by matching the destination address within the datagram with an entry in the current node's routing table.
The Internet Control-Message Protocol (ICMP) is in charge of monitoring packets to make sure they get to their final destination and providing error reports back to the source.
