His surroundings appear peaceful and sedate. Maybe the figure is afraid of peace, or the "normal" world. Maybe something in it exists that he can not handle. Something might be down the stretched bridge that he stands on. It is very hard to tell which of the numerous possibilities is correct.
<Tab/>Perhaps the mystery of the figure's terror is why the painting is so appealing to me? It's color and "flow" scheme are another intriguing point. This has long been a piece of art that I enjoyed viewing. I'm not so sure I will ever completely understand it, but I think if I try too hard it might ruin the magic within the mystery of the painting itself!
