The movie Gandhi starts off with the assassination of Gandhi in 1948. After he is shot, the movie immediately flashes back to Gandhi in the late 1800's. Gandhi began his work against the injustices of the British Empire when he was a young man in South Africa. He was a lawyer and he fought against ethnic discrimination for Indians. South Africa was controlled by the British at this time and Indian's were there working. Gandhi helps them to gain their independence through nonviolence and respect for others.
