Latvia and Latvians

Each nation has own history. This history is full of different developments. Latvia have own history too. I chose to write a short history of Latvia till the 2000 year, because it shows that Latvia isn’t small and unable country.
In 2.500 before Christ the Indo – European tribes arrive on the Baltic Sea. The inhabitants of Latvia split into several tribes: Zemgalians, Selonians, Latgalians and Kurshi. Among surviving tongues Latvian is one of the closest to the original tribal languages.
In the 1100s German traders searched for a trade route with the East. They choose Riga for its strategic location on the Daugava. They prepared to conquer with both Bible and sword. Decisive battles near Riga ensue between the invaders and Livonian settlers.
Riga was founded in 1201, when Bishop Albert was building his castle on the site. Next year was founded the military Order of the Brothers of the Sword. They crushed and converted the warlike, but fatally divided into Latvian and Livonian tribes. …
