Silas Marner owns a small restaurant but he has made a lot of debts because his enterprise doesn’t make profit. He has to go away from the town where he has lived and worked all his life because his private enterprise has been declared bankrupt. He goes to New York to start a new life. He rents a small flat 15 miles from the centre of the city in a rather dangerous area. He lives alone with his cat- Mo. The only property he has is five hundred dollars. Mr Marner keeps them under the bed, because he doesn’t trust anybody, he doesn’t trust even banks.
