The movie starts off with Ruth be awoken by her alarm clock. It talks about how Ruth wakes everyone up and tries to get them ready for work or school. Everything in the beginning of the story is told as in the book. Even the lines and the order are pretty much the same. When Walter wakes up, his first question was if the check had come and Ruth tells him that she doesn't want to think about money right in the morning, which is exactly as written in the novel.
