Air pollution, clean air, and air quality information is provided by the U.S. EPA's Office of Air and Radiation (OAR). OAR develops national programs, technical policies, and regulations for controlling air pollution and radiation exposure. OAR is concerned with pollution prevention, indoor and outdoor air quality, industrial air pollution, pollution from vehicles and engines, radon, acid rain, stratospheric ozone depletion, and radiation protection.
When selecting new cabinets of furniture, choose hardwood. Avoid particle-board and other forms of composite or pressed wood, which contain volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as formaldehyde. Rug cleaners contain hazardous chemicals. Try soap or a non-aerosol shampoo, wear gloves while cleaning, and open the windows for ventilation. Carpet also traps dust, pet dander and mold, which is then redistributed into the air by vacuum cleaners. Specially designed vacuums with a high-efficiency filtration system can inhibit the dispersion of such particles. Choose natural, untreated coverings such as marble, slate or ceramic tile, hardwood, genuine linoleum (not vinyl) or cork. Area rugs, made of natural fibers, are an option in those areas where carpeting is desired.
