Hearing damage begins at around 90 decibels (about as loud as a garbage truck) and the threshold of pain is 130 decibels. Car audio systems are capable of routinely producing 140 decibels (as loud as a jet at take-off) and, in competition systems, can produce sounds as loud as 190 decibels (louder than the Space Shuttle at take off)! Sound levels above 130 decibels are strictly reproduced for competition purposes. These extremely high decibel levels can cause instant hearing loss if the individual is not protected. However, the benefits of an S.Q. (sound quality) based stereo system are abundant.
