The Fall of the Berlin Wall

In conclusion it appears that the major causes of reunification were as follows: First, the reduction in tension between the two super powers; Second, Gorbachev's reform policies and refusal to use force to support the communist regime; Third, overwhelming national pressure from East German citizens and finally, the changing face of communism. These factors, not withstanding efforts made from previous German leaders such as Willy Brandt, secured the future of a united Germany. With regards to consequences, the major ones appear to be the problem of a uniform national identity and the economic burden that the weakened and incompatible system of the East placed upon the West. Obviously there have been other consequences, such as the problem that NATO faced when allowing a former Warsaw Pact member into its ranks and the division in Germany over which city should be their capital –Bonn or Berlin. Surely though. the most noteworthy consequence of reunification was that it allowed families who had been divided for many years to once again unite. This surely, can only be a good thing.…
