Conclusion
The concept of the "one-woman man" has and will continue to cause discussion. The emphasis is being placed on the character of the elder. It also pays special importance on his conduct in his marriage. It has been shown that Paul promotes faithfulness in the marriage as well as sexual purity. The implications for the church today are fourfold. First, the elder does not necessarily have to be married but if he is, he should be married to only one wife. Second, unless his divorce was due to marital unfaithfulness on his wife's part or because she was an unbeliever and left, divorce will exclude a man from holding the office of elder. Third, the passage rules out remarriage. Lastly, the implication of the "one-woman man" qualification is that the elder be faithful and committed to his wife. His role is one of most importance and he should be setting the example in the church.
