Venice Future
Conclusion
In conclusion, Venice-one of the world most famous tourist attractions is slowly but surely dying. If the warning are ignored then before long a very precious city at least could become a ghost town with no local population, its heritage and culture lost but worst still could become a victim of global warming and rising sea levels, flooded to a point where it is no longer fit to inhabit if not destroyed all together. A location that served it well in the past is now turning against it and tourists are only making the problem worse.
There needs to be rapid investment in constructing sea defences and perhaps a good idea would be to have a closed season to tourists which would alllow work and restauration to be done to its infrastructure, thus preserving it to the future. More thought should be given to its inhabitants to ensure that there is affordable housing, medical facilities and bigger variety of food shops. Also that its culture should be documented and tought in schools to the Venecian students.
Warning about Venice have been caming for a long time but now its problems are critical and can no longer be ignored. Perhaps also to help the locals they could create tourist only areas that would not disturb the local population. As far as the canals are concerned the use of propeller driven and power boats should be restricted to stop the propellers doing damage to the canal banks, a use for which they were never intended.
The Venecians are the ones that only know the city better than any one else but can also see the damage that has been done which for the short visit by a tourist would not be obvious, it is important that this knowledge is not lost and that its government listens to them.
With the knowledge I have now about Venice much as I would love to visit it I now realise that I would become a part of the problem and perhaps the best way to see it would be through media and documentaries.
…
Venice is built on an archipelago of 122 islands made by 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the city is built are connected by more than 400 bridges.( newworldencyclopedia.org, 2009) With a changing world climate Venice is one of the few world heritage centers that is at risk of dissapearing all together. Floods are becoming more and more frequent as a sea level rises. It has suffered previously from subsidence when the water level was altered due to industry draining it. Another cause of this is the size and weight of the buildings, full of marble and yet they are only built on mood, added to this the continual weight of all the thousands of tourists. This is a load for which it was never intended, on some days it is so full that people can hardly move. (Davis, 2004) Venice monuments have been crumbling because of the floods and even when repaired are still left weaker than they used to be. Obviously as the sea levels rise this affects the water levels in the lagoon and causes floods as a consequence. As you can see a combination of frequent floods and subsiding fundations is a very great threat of Venice disapearing all together. (Newman, 2009) Also global warming is causing the ice of the poles to melt which in turn increases the sea level, this combined with the land sinking is a very bad combination. Especially when its governmnet claims that it has insuficient funds for maintaining buildings, cleaning canals and raise fundations. (Davis, 2004)
