One of the most important political issue is that Vike- Freiberga criticizes all branches of government- Cabinet of Ministers, Parliament and the judiciary. She had expressed surprise to the head of government considering that the amendments to a law on national security agencies were submitted for consideration on Dec. 29 and passed on Jan. 8. The president also pointed out discrepancies in the criminal code. Vike- Freiberga pointed out at Parliament for failing to appoint an ombudsman. The candidates should have been selected on experts.
Another important political issue is about border treaty:
o Coalitional leaders on Jan.16 decided to pull a controversial declaration from a draft treaty agreement with Russia.
o The Latvian parliament's foreign affairs committee on Jan. 17 sent to the parliament a bill which authorizes the government to sign the Latvian-Russian border treaty.
o Parliament has sent the bill on authorizing the Cabinet of Ministers to sign the Latvian-Russian peace treaty – without an explanatory declaration - to the foreign committee for approval. The bill, which was proposed by the ruling People’s Party, was initialled in 1997.
