The sense of surrealism in the movie appears because the events are too irregular. There is a constant confusion of what has just happened there. Rather than one event leading smoothly and logically to the next, the story drifts fitfully to its abrupt conclusion.
Bill and Alice have been married for nine years. Their daily routine has become mechanized. It’s been suggested that the central theme is the contrast between things which are mechanical and those which are spontaneous. It can be said that the underlying concept behind these themes is the danger of blind faith.
