4. Historical highways from St. Petersburg to the West Europe and the countries of Central Europe were the reasons for the development of tourism in Lithuania
● First hotels in Lithuania are found starting from 1812
● In the mid-19th century curative tourism became popular in Lithuania.
● People from the higher society and high income visited resorts as Palanga, Druskininkai, Birštonas and Šventoji. These resorts have been working until now.
5. From 1918 until 1939 Lithuania established tourism associations and clubs to develop tourism in Lithuania.
The first guide training courses were held in the capital of Lithuania - Kaunas in 1934.
Internal tourism started gaining more importance a little bit later, when the Lithuanian Travelling Association was founded under the auspices of the Physical Culture House in 1937; its main objective was the promotion of domestic tourism.
6. After Lithuania came under Soviet rule, tourism was limited. Domestic tourism level raised, also there were trips allowed around the Soviet Union. In fact, it was not possible to travel from the Soviet Union to Western Europe
For traveling outside the Soviet Union it required a visa, granted to people who were loyal to the existing facility of the Soviet Union.Foreign tourism was organised and controlled by official tourism associations of Soviet Union - Sputnik and Intourist.
