The Vietnam war started on the 1st of November of 1955. It was a war between Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) and Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). The South Vietnam was a part of Western Bloc countries during the Cold War and was heavily backed up by the United States (US), whilst North Vietnam was a country which supported communist regime and was backed up by People`s Republic of China (China) and the Soviet Union (USSR). This war was one of the longest and one of the cruelest conflicts during the Cold War. The South Vietnam didn`t have a solidified armed forces during that time and the USA understood that the communist regime could easily expand in South Vietnam, so they decided to support them by giving weapons, ammunition, vehicles etc. As the war started, the North Vietnamese side gained a lot of control, and they had the military advantage because of the great support from USSR and China. It was understandable for the USA that they need to take a more impactful actions in Vietnam, so the president of USA Lyndon B. Johnson decided to deploy ground troops in Vietnam in 1964. United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara did inform the president that it was risky measure to take because there was not big confidence in winning this war. President of the USA had a choice to make – leave Vietnam and accept a defeat against communist regime or deploy the ground troops of US and try to fight a very tough war. The choice was made in favor of deploying ground troops. It was understandable that US feared of being perceived as a weak power in the eyes of the world and especially in the USSR.
