In the first chapter of the research I have evaluated the most characteristic lexical and textual contents of the Old English literature. In the first subchapter, the research on the Old English verse and stylistic devices have been done, while in the second subchapter is devoted to research on vocabulary formation and loan words from Latin, Scandinavian and Celtic languages.
The second chapter contains analysis of the concept of hero and the thought or religion and myth. In the first subchapter, attention to the Beowulf and the concept of hero has been paid. The second subchapter deals with myths and religion in the Anglo-Saxon world. Their most important gods have been mentioned, short introduction about the worship of the sun and the moon and small description of Anglo-Saxon attitude towards elves have been written.
The third chapter is devoted to lexical analysis of “The Lord of the Rings”. The first subchapter deals with Elvish language; it contains analysis of a fragment of a poem and a spell written in Elvish. In the second subchapter, analyses of several fragments from poems have been done and usages of lexical devices and rhythmical patterns have been done. The third subchapter is devoted to analysis of vocabulary and formation of proper nouns – short comparison between Elvish and Old English has been done and origins of some words have been given.
The fourth chapter deals with analysis of characters in “The Lord of the Rings”. In the first subchapter, the concept of hero in “The Lord of the Rings” is researched, analysis of the fates of Aragorn and Frodo have been done and short descriptions of the deeds of Gandalf, Samwise, two hobbits, Legolas and Gimli have been written as well. The second subchapter is a research on mythical creatures in “The Lord of the Rings”, based on the Appendixes in the end of the work.…
The research is devoted to the analysis of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel “The Lord of the Rings” in order to research the usage of Anglo-Saxon elements in this work. In the theoretical part, the features of Old English literature and the daily life of Anglo-Saxons’ were researched, while in the practical part, comparison between features discussed in the theoretical part and fragments from “The Lord of the Rings” concentrating mostly on the Elvish language and the creation of vocabulary was done. The analysis showed that Tolkien had been inspired by the Anglo-Saxon culture while writing “The Lord of the Rings”.
