The debate about whether men are from Mars and women from Venus, whether men are better lawyers and women better nurses because they think differently and their brain work differently is ongoing and still heated up. Deirdre Fernand is discussing it in her article “Two sexes divided by a single brain”, published in The Sunday Times, April 1, 2007. However, this might be just another example of an author using particular scientific discoveries to present her position on the given topic. Therefore Fernand’s article should be analyzed not only by its content, but also by strategy used to find out whether it is true or not.
Fernand’s article has a sub-title which is self-explaining. It says “Men and women really do think differently, and the latest technology reveals why, says neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine.” Fernand is revealing Brizendine’s findings that explain why men and women are so different, saying that the cause is hormones. She goes on with several examples how these particular scientific findings validate certain stereotypes about gender differences of our society.…
