1. Sadness is an emotion that is often associated with the feelings of disadvantage, loss, and helplessness. Often, humans react to being sad by getting quiet, and they experience a lack of energy and a need to be withdrawn. Sadness is considered to be the direct opposite of happiness, and can also be characterized as sorrow, grief, misery, and melancholy. Sadness exists in two main ways: the temporary lowering of one’s mood, or the chronic, persistent lowering of one’s mood often associated with depression. Sadness is characterized by a facial expression that causes someone to lower the corners of their mouth, and raise the inner portion of their brows.
2. Facts - One study found that individuals who had narrower faces and more prominent noses were more likely to be perceived as intelligent. People with smiling, joyful expression were also judged as being more intelligent than those with angry expressions.
