Richard Aldington once said that the sense of any post-war man’s life was concluded in his ability to adopt new circumstances, to be suited in the contemporary world full of intelligent fools and educated profanes considering themselves superior to all and everyone. More correctly the formula of life in the writer’s words, cynically mocking at post-war people’s so-called intellect, sounded in the following way: “Hasten to adopt the slimy mask of British humbug and British fear of life, or expect to be smashed.” (2,84) Indeed, by presenting the “full of terrible despair”(3,84) book, the aim of the author was to laugh openly at drawbacks (too a weak word chosen for expressing what was going on in society) and flaws of his contemporaries. …
