Remote and Autonomous Ships

This innovation can cause some changes into the “paradigm” innovation regarding to what the organization does; for example, navigating the vessel without on board crew. But in the same time, the fact that there will not be crew on board the ships is influencing all upper mentioned innovation spaces to a greater or lesser extent.
If we are looking from shipbuilding side, this innovation can be related to all four types of 4Ps innovations: “product” innovation, “process” innovation, “position” innovation and “paradigm innovation”. Changes into the “product” innovation would be regarding to the new ship`s design, systems, and trials. The “process” innovation would refer to newbuilding`s delivery process which plays sufficient role into vessels building process, as the “position” innovation because the remote and autonomous ships will change the main context of services and products which the yards are offering. There may be not so much changes into “paradigm” innovation because yards will still be building ships but main difference will be what kind of vessel and in which way they are building them.
However this innovation project will bring a lot of changes in the future for shipping industry and people involved into maritime industry must be ready to deal and adopt with this transitions which may appear.

INNOVATION CASE: “REMOTE AND AUTONOMOUS SHIPS” Some years ago there was a vision of a future about ships selling and carrying cargo without any person on board. The remote controlled and autonomous cargo vessels which would be possible to control from land based crew stations was just an imagination, but nowadays thanks to fast technologies development, the vision has become reality. There are already existing some autonomous vessels as a test. The project, called an “Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative” (AAWA) led by the Rolls-Royce is quite serious and requires a lot of effort and funding, there are several companies which are involved in research and development processes. To see who has done what and to find out what will be the main benefit and utility, it is worth to take a closer look in this particular innovation project. The chosen central topic will be: “Commercializing technological products” and the specific question addressed to this paper is: “Which risk assessment techniques were applied during the development process of autonomous ships?”
