Economic and other significance to humans:
The river red gum is a very valuable resource for humans, both the timber from the tree and other purposes it serves. This is because the of the trees ability to produce acceptable yields and thrive in a diverse range of climatic and environmental conditions.
The wood produced from the river red gum is the major purpose for plantations. There are plantations all over the world including Australia, Argentina, Arizona, California, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra, Leone, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Upper Volta, Uruguay and Zimbabwe. The timber produced is used for heavy construction, railway sleepers, building purposes, timber (plywood, veneer and turnery) (Duke 1983:6).
Some other products derived from the river red gum include honey, oils, medicinal (methanol extracted is used in cough medicines), ornamentals, firewood, charcoal, fuel wood and windbreaks (EUCLID 2003:3; Chippendale & Johnston 1969:34).
Management of genetic resources:
The river red gum is the most widespread species of Eucalypt in Australia, it occurs in every mainland state.
