It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
This first sentence of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" couldn't have prepared the reader better for the rest of the novel.
Austen reveals details about her characters through the characters themselves i.e. through their dialogue and gossip to each other rather than her narrating about them. This then means the reader can pick up on the characters personalities by the way that they get on. …
