For teenagers, it can become a language through which they communicate identity, interests, social belonging, confidence, creativity, and even mood before saying a single word. A teenager choosing a particular jacket, pair of shoes, hairstyle, bag, jewellery, or colour combination may be making a practical decision, but they may also be showing what kind of music they enjoy, which social group they identify with, how they want others to see them, or whether they prefer to follow or reject current trends.
