While many 'do' work for the paycheck alone, many also choose the jobs they are in for the 'love' of the job itself. There are students who have graduated as engineers and have the potential at making six and seven-figure salaries, yet choose to work at a church teaching school making forty or fifty thousand a year. Motivations, incentives and a sense of have changed over time in that everyone has different reasons for doing what they do.
Industries are still looking for ways to save money; it's the "nature of the game". Ultimately, with competition sprouting up everywhere, that is what has to be done in order to stay in business. But companies such as Southwest Airlines still keeps their employees as their number one priority. This was evident when, instead of laying off their employees due to financial hardships, they sold some of their planes.
