In Canada, the community policing philosophy has become the standard model of service delivery for most police agencies. The Edmonton Police Service was a pioneer in the community policing field, adopting the philosophy in 1984. The RCMP officially began implementing this approach in 1990.
Support for this new model is widespread. The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and the Canadian Association of Police Boards have expressed strong support for community policing methods. Furthermore, in the 1997 Speech from the Throne, the federal government confirmed it viewed community policing as the policing service delivery of choice, stating "safe communities ... depend on strong crime prevention efforts.
