Introduction
Many a man's vices have at first been nothing worse than good qualities run wild.
- Augustus and Julius Hare

Each person in this world is a personality and he/she is unique: he/she has his/her own character, behaviour and points of view. However, there is one thing that may unite all people in the world. No matter how different we all are, everyone of us have our own vices. People usually do not consider it as a drawback: just a peculiarity of human character.
It is important to note that some time before human vices were nothing more than our desires, wishes and capabilities. Human is so curious creature; after one achievement we want to accomplish more and more which leads to the loss of our self-control. As a consequence, our good qualities, that once helped us to achieve some point, become human’s selfishness.
Quotation made by Augustus and Julius Hare fully characterizes the play “The Circle” by William Somerset Maugham (W. Somerset Maugham). Good position in society, plethora of money, private house and all conveniences in life… All this facts were destructive for the women of the play. Both women suffered from boredom and lack of interest in society. They wanted to experience something new and unprecedented. Thus, their good qualities of being ladies belonging to higher society, being brought up in good and well-off families and being given education, run wild and turned into vices that ruined their lives.

The aim
The goal of the present term paper is to investigate the essence of humour in the comedy, its kinds and characteristics. Thirdly, it is important to find as more information about the characters as possible in order to understand the message of the narrator. Finally, the aim of this paper is to present why this comedy is considered widely acclaimed by the readers.

The enabling objectives
To attain the above mentioned aim the following tasks were set:
1. to read the plays very carefully and to translate it (for better understanding of the whole play).
2. to study the available information on the topic and to carry out a selective analysis of the theoretical sources relevant to the theme investigated in the paper.
