Masculinity VS Femininity, Geert Hofstede
Origins of Masculinity-Femininity Differences
There are some different sources when we can identifies the origins of Masculinity and Femininity. The oldest one is contained in the Christian Old Testament, two conflicting versions of the creation of the sexes: first one suggests equal partnership between man and woman ("(...) man and female created them.") instead the second gives priority to male ("it is not good that he man should be alone"). From ancient Greece, with Plato, sociologists and anthropologists from around the world, observing the reality around them, they could associate the behavior of a people or a civilization to masculinity and femininity (Margaret Mead, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Francis Wilsingam ecc).
The Future
In these days we can recognize two different points of view about the future.
In the first one we find a lower fertility in the wealthier part of the world: masculinity scores decreased with age; the consequence is that an older population will shift toward more feminine values because women will needed in the new workforce. On the contrary for the poorer part of the world, especially in Asian countries there is a problem towards the suppression of female births (this fact is attributable to the desire of parents to have sons or the old practice to kill baby girls); this can generate a surplus of men and increase the masculinity of the society.
…
Morality at this example is that Dutch and American societies are similar on the dimensions of power distance or individualism but they differ on dimension called masculinity vs. femininity or in this case assertive behavior against the desirability of modest behavior. As we guessed in the beginning of this report this text will be about genders, dominance of one or another’s quality’s. “All human societies consist of men and woman, usually in approximately equal numbers. … Men are on average taller and stronger. Women have faster metabolism, which enables them to recover faster from fatigue. ” These are not only physical differences what we can see on everyday basis. There is many more to take in account. That doesn’t mean that one or another are better but they differ. If we speak about differences in work environment and things differs in ones and another’s thinking is men’s are supposed to be more concerned with achievements outside the home – (in history that was hunting and fighting wars). Men are supposed to be assertive, competitive and tough. And women are supposed to be more concerned with taking care of the home, of children and of people in general. First we will call as Masculine person, because women can have these values as well and second will be Feminine person.
